Perry, Macon Brock and Doug Perry (K.R. Perry’s Son) opened K&K Toys in 1970, which by 1986 became a 130-store strong chain. Meanwhile, the K&K 5&10 variety store continued to exist and later on served as the foundation for the present day Dollar Tree. In 1986, Macon Brock and Doug Perry and Ray Compton started Only $1.00 with 5 stores. In 1991, K&K Toys were sold and all the assets were put in to develop and grow the Only $1.00 concept. In 1993, Dollar Tree officially came into existence with the name of Only$1 changed to Dollar Tree. In 1995, Dollar Tree went public on the NASDAQ exchange in March at $15 a share. The then Market cap of the company was calculated at $225 million.
