FedEx- One of the fastest Multinational Courier Services

FedEx Corporation is an US based multinational courier company with its headquarters located in Memphis, Tennessee. “FedEx” is derived from the name of the company’s original air division Federal Express. The company was called as Federal Express itself, from the day of its inception, in 1976 till 2000. Apart from being famous for its overnight shipping services, FedEx is also the pioneer of the system which tracks packages and provides real time updates on package location. Currently, the firm is led by Frederick Smith, The Chairman, President and CEO. In 2016, the company reported that 400,000 employees work for the firm. FedEx specializes in the less lucrative domain of express delivery, which has proved to be adding on to the company.

Current Market Value

Shipping is a tough business that requires great infrastructure and expertise in its line of business, which FedEx has in spades. The company reported revenue of 47.453 billion in 2015, which has increased to over US$ 50 billion in 2016. FedEx reported a Net Income of US $2.57 billion, Total Assets of US $37.069 billion and Total Equity of US $14.990 billion in the year 2015. In 2016, FedEx achieved its US $1.6 billion profit improvement goal outlined in 2013. FedEx officially acquired the Dutch delivery company TNT express on 25th May 2016.  FedEx has been featuring in the list of World’s Fortune 500 companies for the past 22 years. From the position of 136 in 1984, FedEx has taken the 58th place in 2016. It has also featured in other lists like World’s Most Admired Company with 8th position and 192nd position in the Global 500 companies. FedEx began its intercontinental operations in 1984, which has now spread across 220 nations of the world.

How it began: the History

The unparalleled achievements of FedEx, in the logistics industry started with the term paper written by Frederick Smith at the Yale University on the logistical challenges faced by the pioneering firms in the information technology industry. Smith stated that most of the airfreight shippers relied on the passenger route systems, which did not make economic sense for urgent shipments.  In 1971, with his term paper in mind, he took an initiative to set a better propaganda for the logistics industry, which is when the Federal Express took birth. Since then FedEx has revolutionized the global business practices to become the synonym of speed and reliability. The headquarters were later moved from Little Rock, Arkansas to Memphis, because of its central location in the US and also the Memphis Airport hardly remained closed due to bad weather.

Operation Procedure

The company initiates the shipment by either dropping the item off at a FedEx office or requesting pickup from the customer’s location. If the parcel has to be collected from the customer’s place, the driver collects it and drops it off at a local service center. It undergoes scanning and is transferred to a regional sorting facility. If the destination is less than 200 miles away, it is put on a truck to go to its destination sort facility. Otherwise, it is put on a plane to Memphis Where the shipment is unloaded, scanned and transferred to a plane going to the destination sort facility. At the destination, it is again scanned and transferred to the local service center, after which it is loaded on a truck and delivered to the recipient’s door.
With a thriving market value, and sumptuous net income, the investors could strike gold while putting their money in any of its properties. If you are still only thinking to get long term returns, this is high time that you consider FedEx as a viable investment option.
