Staples – Possessing One of the Largest Office Supply Chains in the US
Staples is a large scale office supply chain company that has 2000 stores operating across worldwide within 26 nations. The organisation however, has been found during 1986 when the management opened in Brighton, Massachusetts. The “Quill Corporation” has been the most profitable division for the organisation that accounts for almost 25% of the organisational income. During the period of 1998-2009 this particular division grew tremendously from $500 million to way over than $1.3 billion.
It was during the year 1985 that the idea of setting up the organisation was developed. However, the founder Thomas G. Stemberg had to face significant problems for proceeding with his idea. The idea however gradually grew to the position that is visible to the world today. Different subsidiaries of the Staples are “Officenet-Staples”, “Office Centre”, “Staples Canada”, “Mondoffice” and others. The organisation also prefers doing business with the enterprises that are operating within various nations across the European Continent in the name “Staples Advantage”.
Number of Locations
Including the number of locations that the organisation operates within, it has a fleet of 3,856 stores, including 125 warehouses along with fulfilment stores. The organisation has been operating across 26 nations as discussed above including Austria, china, Brazil, Germany, France, Denmark, Norway, India, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, Portugal and others. The organisation while serving within these above mentioned nations serve under the original name. While on the other hand, while the organisation is operating within Argentina, Netherlands and Belgium, Italy and Canada they operate with their subsidiary.
Gradually the organisation started growing and during 1991 the organisation did found the Canadian Subsidiary “The Business Depot”. The organisation then started opening various stores under that particular subsidiary name. However, over the next decade these stores were again renamed as “staples”. The very first store was established in Ontario, Vaughan and Northern side of Toronto. The very next year the organisation decided for expansion, started venturing within European nations and opened their first store within United Kingdom and Swansea.
During the year 1996, the organisation successfully achieved their position as one of the 500 enterprises that surpassed $3 billion sales. Then the organisation successfully acquired naming rights for “Staples Centre” particularly within Los Angeles during the construction in 1998. The 500th store was opened within Florida and the 1000th store was opened in the Duluth, Georgia. The store has been successful so far and they decided to go under a merger with “Office Depot” during 4th of September in 1996.
However, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) decided that the merger would entirely be biased and would give a significant rise in the price regardless of competition from “OfficeMax”. The FTC also decided that this would adversely affect the local market condition, however “Staples” put their argument forward that there would still be significant level of competition that they would face from the “Wal-Mart “ and “Circuit City Stores”. However, their arguments were not sufficient to convince the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). This eventually ended up with denying the merger of “Staple” and “Office Depot”. This eventually resulted in forming of a rivalry between these two organisations again.
The organisation gradually started gaining significant importance across the members of European Unions and gained access to the European markets. The products that the organisations operates with include office supplies, furnishing related to office premises, janitorial supplies, IT consulting office and data centre technology, Hardware sourcing, Industry specific supplies, health and beauty, electronics, furniture, snacks and others. The diversity in their product list also attracts numerous industry and individual customers towards them.
